Money Magic: Abundance Ritual

Happy (slightly belated!) Labor Day! To celebrate hard work & hustle (and honor the beginning of a brand new month), I wanted to share this abundance ritual I crafted. This spellwork is designed for experienced practitioners and newbies alike, and requires very little by way of specialized or expensive materials (after all, that would defeat the purpose of growing your wealth, right?)

As we leave summer behind and enter fall, we often feel a sense of renewed energy and vigor. Whether real or imagined, the seasonal shift brings with it new opportunities to change, evolve, and grow - and energetically, this means it's a prime time to set up ritual and spell work!

So, whether you're saving for a big purchase, struggling to pay off debt, or you've just had a slow summer and need a quick cash injection to set up you for the rest of the year, grab a couple dollar bills, a mason jar, and a sharpie and let's get to it.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Two (2) dollar bills, or small denomination bills in your currency of choice. (Coins will do in a pinch).
  • A medium sized glass jar (mason jars are perfect, but any kind of jar or bottle will do).
  • Gold paint, or a gold pen that can write on glass.
  • A single cinnamon stick.
  • Green or gold ribbon (both, if you have it)

Optional extras...

I'm a firm believer that witchcraft and intentional manifestation don't require fancy props or ingredients. However, if you already have these extras or if you feel you want to invest, the following herbs and crystals can help strengthen your spell:

  • Tiger's Eye (Crystal)
  • Citrine (Crystal)
  • Jade (Crystal)
  • Bay Leaf (herb)
  • Calendula (herb)
  • Honeysuckle (herb)

STEP ONE: SET UP YOUR SIGIL

Sigils are magickal symbols used throughout history by ceremonial magicians, occultists, and religious practitioners to imbue items with a particular power or to summon spiritual energies. Most commonly they're associated with the Lesser Key of Solomon, a goetic text from the 17th Century. However, chaos magicians and other practitioners have been using their own form of sigil making for decades to strengthen their spellwork and bring their intentions into tangible reality - and it works!

There are many ways to create (or channel) a sigil, and it's a topic I'll dive into in more depth in the future. For now, if you feel comfortable crafting your own magickal symbol there are plenty of good guides online to get you started.

For this ritual specifically, you want to craft your sigil with your specific financial goal in mind. For example, if you want to pay off your credit card debt, using the consonants of the words "PAY DEBT" (PYDBT) might be a good start. From there, you can include any symbols that have potent meaning for you into the mix. Working within a specific spiritual context or with a particular deity? Include a symbol meaningful to that path. Need money by a certain date? Include those numbers in the mix.

Key to sigil making is anonymizing the symbol, complicating it to the extent that you cannot recognize or remember its individual parts. So get creative!

If you're not yet at a point where you feel comfortable making your own sigils, here's one I drew up with a general 'wealth attraction' intention:

STEP TWO: MAKE YOUR MONEY HUNT FOR YOU

Hunting Dollars are bills that have been ritually charged to generate more wealth for you after they've been spent. Essentially, spending this money intentionally (on, say, supplies for this ritual) puts the energy of the spell out into the world as well as keeping it close to home.

Take your dollar bill (or small denomination note) and draw your sigil into each of it's four corners. It doesn't have to be big - in fact, you probably want to keep it as small as possible to avoid rendering the currency useless. Black pen is probably best for this, so it's legible.

If using a coin, you can draw the sigil in permanent marker on the head side. But you're probably better off using a note, as the repetition of the sigil in the four corners strengthens the spell (and it's easier to write on a bill than a coin!)

If you have a working altar, feel free to leave the currency there for a few days to further charge. When you're ready, take that baby shopping! For best results, you're going to want to spend it on supplies you'll use for the rest of the spell (a paintbrush, say, or a new Sharpie). If you feel so inclined, charge up numerous notes. It works just fine with one, but there's no harm in putting more energy out into the universe.

STEP THREE: CONSTRUCT YOUR SPELL JAR

Once you have all the supplies you're going to use, it's time to set up your spell jar. Take the mason jar and paint the sigil from earlier on the outside in gold paint. When I first completed this ritual this time last year, I was working closely with Astaroth - you can see their sigil on the outside of my own spell jar. (And reader, let me tell you--my goal for that ritual was to have enough money to pursue tarot and spiritual work full-time. I had quit my 9-5 desk job two months prior and was struggling, terrified I'd have to go back to a job that did not fulfill me. It's been over a year, and in that time I have never had to go back to working in an office. I've worked as a reader and practitioner only - something I never thought I'd be able to do!)

Next you're going to want to set up the herbal portion of your jar. If you're sticking to the basic recipe and using just the cinnamon, take another dollar bill (with or without sigils - depends on how thorough you want to be!) and wrap it tightly around the herb. Tie up the bundle with a length of green or gold ribbon (as you can see, I used both). Drop gently into the mason jar.

If you're using other herbs, my personal preference is to place them all in a small fabric pouch or bag before tossing them into your jar. There's no right or wrong way to do this, I just often use finely-milled herbs that settle into dust and get all over everything else in the jar if I don't bag them first. Some folks prefer the look of a jar full of loose herbs. It's totally up to you.

My own herb pouch used jasmine, star anise, and sandalwood along with the herbs I mentioned in the shopping list earlier. You might find some herbs correspond better to your specific financial needs. Add and subtract as you see fit.

Finally, add any crystals you've decided to use. Ideally crystals will have been cleansed and charged first, and you can be as particular about this as you like. Certain moon phases are better for working with finances, but I usually lack the patience and foresight to wait around for the ideal planetary positions. If this is important to you, or if you have the time, go for it!

Screw the lid on tight. You won't be opening this sucker up again.

STEP FOUR: MINDFUL MANIPULATION

Here comes what I consider to be the most important aspect of this spell: the upkeep. We already have two powerful forces at work: the hunter money, circulating and seeking out more cash to bring your way, and the spell jar itself (which you can keep in your ritual space, on your altar, or in any area where it's safe but visible). But how can you add to the spell over time? What will help your money grow?

I keep my spell jar on my altar, in proximity to several candles I burn regularly for spiritual strength and removing blocked energy. Because I use my altar daily, every time I hang out there, the money spell is getting a little boost.

But the most important action is this: I work a job where I take home a reasonable amount of my income in cash. The majority of this cash goes straight onto my altar at the end of the day - I place it directly under that mason jar (though you could put it inside, too, if you wanted). This simple act is twofold: on the one hand, ever bill I earn gets a magickal charge as it hangs out under my spell jar. On the other, having a place to put it other than my wallet prevents me from spending it before the week is over. Win/win.

If you don't earn in cash, you could consider putting paystubs in or under your spell jar, or any receipts you're given that indicate money earned. You could even keep checks there until you have time to bank them. The point is to create an ongoing ritual of 'feeding' the spell by literally watching your earnings accumulate.

I've done custom ritual work along these lines before for clients who saw results as quickly as two or three weeks after the spell was crafted. You will see results: just remember that magick is about practice, not immediate performance. You have to do the work to reap the rewards, and if your energy is out of balance (for example, if you're spending all your money feeding an addiction, or if you quit your job immediately after crafting the spell with no intention of getting a new one) then yes, your results may vary.

The universe doesn't reward indolence. Keep at your practice, keep striving toward growth, and you'll see a return on your investment. Summer has been a shitkicker for many of us, but as we enter this seasonal shift all things are evolving, rekindling, and reconnecting.

Good luck out there, and happy (almost) fall!

xoxo
